Ti Bus
Transforming experiences with TI Bus
Ti is a public sanitation initiative by entrepreneurs Ulka Sadalkar and Rajeev Kher launched in 2016 in Pune, India. They have refurbished scrapped public buses into clean and well facilitated public toilets exclusively for women and have placed them at different high footfall spots in Pune.
Inaccessible or ill-maintained public toilets in India have been a brooding inconvenience for decades, and more so for women. Even in urgent situations, many refrain from using a public toilet because of the unbearable smell and overwhelming filth, and sometimes even lack of functional taps and flushes.
Ti’s well-lit, well-maintained and technologically advance public toilets are an initiative to solve that problem, and goes well beyond just providing women with a hygienic washroom experience.
Each bus has western toilets, Indian toilets, a diaper changing station, sanitary napkins vending machine, essential toiletries. They’re solar powered and also have LED screens that display educational videos about female hygiene and a digital feedback panel. One toilet receives an average of 150 ladies per day.
Ti was initiated by 3S – a division of SaraPlast Pvt. Ltd. along with Pune Municipal Corporation and their CSR partner -Indus Towers Limited.
KEY CHALLENGES
1.
Unavailability of dedicated sanitary napkin collection bins that enable source-level segregation of harmful sanitary waste.
2.
Continual issue of toilet clogging because pads are flushed down the toilets.
3.
Gap in aligning with UN’s sustainability goals.
4.
Soiled sanitary pads being piled up in the cubicles, sometimes even unwrapped.
5.
Maintenance staff and janitors feeling unsafe and degraded, having to deal with sanitary waste with little protective gear.
APPROACH
4 PadCare bins were installed in Ti buses at different locations. With a footfall of over 150 women per day, the bins were being used frequently for private and comfortable pad disposal. Our waste collecting partner emptied the bins on a weekly basis and transported them to the Central Processing Unit of the city.
Through the 5D process, the pads were converted into harmless, reusable cellulose and plastic.
This output was handed over to the vendors that made pots out of it.
IMPACT
By partnering with PadCare, Ti was able to align their initiative with SDG 3, 6, 11 and 13.

FINAL WORD
Clean public toilets are integral to the Swachh Bharat movement and for Pune’s Smart City initiative. “Ti” which translates to “she or her” in Marathi, is taking the idea of a public toilet two steps ahead.
The availability of PadCare bins in Ti buses made women feel much safer in using the lavatories – physically and psychologically. It also enhanced the hygiene inside the cubicles and made the maintenance staff feel more dignified about their job.
Ulka Sadalkar
- Co-founder of Saraplast
There were four bins set up in different toilets on the buses. It was such a good system as it produced no odour and blended well with the rest of the bathroom. It did not occupy much space, and women found it very comfortable to drop their sanitary pads discreetly.

FINAL WORD
ITI is an institute where the major student population arrives from a rural and remote residence, where menstrual issues are considered a taboo. Students are hesitant to talk about their period health and lavatory experiences. Lack of conversation leads to even bigger problems like spread of UTIs.
With the availability of PadCare Bin inside the campus toilets as well as interactive awareness programs, both male and female students have become more comfortable in talking about their personal hygiene biases and have a less restrictive perspective about safe absorbent usage and practices.
Female students also feel more comfortable coming to the college during their periods. Now, it’s a growing culture of safety, hygiene and a sense of community in dismantling taboos.
